TOP ACCOLADES FOR HOMEMAKERS AT THE EXSA AWARDS
TOP ACCOLADES FOR HOMEMAKERS AT THE EXSA AWARDS

TOP ACCOLADES FOR HOMEMAKERS AT THE EXSA AWARDS

The 2011 Gauteng HOMEMAKERS Expo has been voted the Best Consumer Exhibition of the Year in the category for large exhibitions over 12,000m², at the annual EXSA (Exhibition Association of Southern Africa) Gala Award Function held in Sandton last week (Thursday, 3 November 20011). This is the fourth year in a row that Gauteng HOMEMAKERS has achieved top accolades in this regard.

The EXSA award recognises excellence in the Exhibition Industry of Southern Africa and also includes awards for Best Venue, Best Stand Designers, Best Suppliers, Best Organiser and other individual awards.
HOMEMAKERS took part in a meticulous judging process by independent EXSA appointed judges at their Gauteng Expo in February this year. Their marketing campaign, promotions and features, signage, branding, safety and security, traffic flow as well as feedback from visitors and exhibitors regarding their experience of the show, were all criteria upon which the expo was judged.

Ray Abrahamse, MD of HOMEMAKERS is delighted with the award: “The standard of competition that we are up against is extremely high. It’s important to remember that one competes on a national basis with a large variety of exhibition types. As part of the judging process our exhibitors gave us outstanding reviews, especially with regards to our organisational abilities and the type of quality visitor our expo attracts. We'd like to use this opportunity thank all of them for putting in the extra effort with regards to their stands. Without their commitment and dedication, we would not have won this prestigious award. By claiming this title for the fourth year in a row, we trust this gives them the added assurance that they're exhibiting with a credible and highly acclaimed Expo. As a group, we're dedicated to giving visitors only the best experience and products.”

HOMEMAKERS is a national group which presents four similar home lifestyle shows in Gauteng, Cape Town, Durban and Port Elizabeth. It is South Africa's biggest home enhancement exhibition group and since its inception 19 years ago has proven to be the country's premier home lifestyle event.

Apart from exhibitions, the company also publishes two monthly magazines, HOMEMAKERSfair and HOMEMAKERStalk. HOMEMAKERS also run South Africa's largest home improvement portal www.homemakersonline.co.za.

KSA Gauteng holds their September Affiliate Product Evening

In September KSA Gauteng held its quarterly Affiliate Product evening,
The purpose of these evenings is to provide a platform to show case the affiliate members’ products as well as help keep you informed to the latest designs and trends. Each evening is hosted by 3 different suppliers in the industry.

The master of ceremonies for the evening was Alfredo Veiga of Sariga Designer Kitchens, who is currently the Gauteng Executive committee’s chairman and he began by thanking the sponsors of the evening. Eclipse Furniture and Hardware supplies doubled as host and sponsor for the evening with co-sponsors Best Italia and Caesarstone. Each got the opportunity to outline some of their new & exciting products and their respective features.

Andre Hacquebord, the KSA’s installer’s course coordinator, was able to address the industry with regards to the KSA Installers course as he was running the September course. He also spoke about the new training courses that are being planned. The installers courses, which has been running since 2001, is in the process of getting a face lift and being expanded from a standard course to an intermediate and advanced course. There have never been any specialised kitchen installation training courses offered in the industry and this is why the KSA has started this initiative. Courses will be offered in basic, intermediate and what they call ‘the master course’ which is the advanced course.

The evening was a great success and enjoyed by all.

The KSA and Decorex enjoy another successful 2011 show
The KSA and Decorex enjoy another successful 2011 show

The KSA and Decorex enjoy another successful 2011 show

Over 53 000 visitors - 6 464 more than last year - flocked to Decorex Joburg at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand.

This five-day event, held from 5 to 9 August 2011, boasted over 700 high-end exhibitors, five halls brimming with newly unveiled products, 75 special interest talks and demonstrations, nine pop-up restaurants designed exclusively for the show and over 22 000 m² exhibition space.

“The numbers speak for themselves,” says an elated Melanie Robinson, Decorex SA portfolio director. “To mark the exhibition’s 18th birthday we promised consumers and trade professionals the biggest and best Decorex ever - which was no idle talk. While we anticipated a good turnout, the 14% growth in visitor numbers and their positive response, exceeded our highest expectations.”

To achieve this in a flattened economy bodes well for the local design and interiors industry, reckons Robinson. “These exceptional figures mean increased exposure for our exhibitors, which is vital in hard times. It also confirms the appreciation for Decorex SA as a brand: consumers see it as the go-to event for emerging trends, new products and practical design solutions, while exhibitors see it as an effective way to connect with existing and new customers.”
“We placed more focus on creative collaborations with top industry players by commissioning several design studios to create inspirational installations and curate trend-forward concept stands,” says Robinson. “Since Decorex Joburg’s debut in 1994, the show has been on a crusade for home-grown design. It is apt that in our 18th year we could celebrate our own growth together with the design revival of Johannesburg and the extraordinary creative energy of our local talent.”
Decorex SA also launched the 2nd edition of ‘It’s all in the Detail 2011/12’, an essential annual sourcebook for interiors, design and stylish living at the show, with credible finds, extensive listings, decor inspiration and trade secrets. Where KSA members were listed at no charge!
Two KSA members received a Certificate for Stand Excellence; Twenty one exhibitors received Decorex Stand Excellence Awards. Congratulations to: Kitchen Studio and Caesarstone:
The KSA would like to Whirlpool SA for donating a prize for the KSA competition, to create awareness about the Kitchen Specialists Association.
The KSA also had a successful turn out for the member’s breakfast.
Thank you to all KSA members who contributed towards the event, without them these events would not be possible!

KSA, Austro Engineering and National Edging hold an edging coffee morning

11th July 2011

KSA, Austro Engineering and National Edging hold an edging coffee morning

The KSA with the help of Austro Engineering and National Edging held a coffee morning at Grass in Montague Gardens.

The aim was to address the problems experienced in the industry when it comes to edging and adhesives which seem to increase with the onset of winter.

The talk was well received and addressed some very important issues. Below are Austro Engineering and National Edging’s top tips to avoiding problems with your edging:

• An edge-bander should be purchased from a reputable company offering full after sales service whilst ensuring the edge bander selected fits your company’s requirements and budget.

• Trained staff is the key to a quality finish - not the edge banders capability. It is suggested two staff members are fully trained as edge-banding operators.

• Ensure quality raw materials including edge-banding adhesives and edging are used as this will reflect on the final finish.

• As a manufacturer take ownership of machinery, ensuring that regular maintenance is carried out. Take care of your investment.

• Some older edge-banders can be retrofitted and updated with substrate cleaning and buffing systems like the Riepe system.

• Various edge-banding adhesives are formulated for specific edge-banding applications, therefore it is imperative that the correct adhesive type is selected for the correct application For example high-speed edge-banders run with hot melt designed to operate at higher temperatures with faster set rates than that of a contour edge-bander that operate at lower temperatures with longer open times.

• Slightly filled or unfilled hot melt adhesives offer a higher yield than filled hot melt with an invisible glue line and reduced maintenance costs.

• Glue pot temperatures not maintained at the correct temperature to suit the glue characteristics may result in the glue either burning or not adhering to the edging. If for any reason you need to change your glue, please ensure that your glue pot is thoroughly flushed and cleaned before adding new glue. Mixing brands and products may lead to changes in the chemical make-up which once again will affect the final finish.

• Where are you storing your materials?? It is suggested that your board and edging be stored at room temperature 18°C. Whilst most South African factories do not have temperature controls as they do in Europe, it would be suggested that your board is stored in the warmest part of your factory. The fitting of pre-heater bars, infra-red heaters or hot air blowers to the edge-bander can also be used to pre-heat the board edge prior to edging. Your machinery supplier will assist with this. We also suggest edging material is stored in a temperature controlled room.

• Ensure pressure settings on your edge bander correspond with the thickness of edging being applied. Without correct pressures; the hot glue is unable to transfer from the board to the edging to create a suitable bond.

• Ensure pre-milling, trimming and scraper blades are kept sharpened and regularly maintained.

• Never overfill the glue pot or allow the glue level to drop too far. Refill at regular intervals maintaining a constant level.

• Note where the edgebander is positioned. Avoid open doors, drafts and overhead fans. Changes in ambient temperatures will affect glue performance.

• Store glues correctly. Ensure the glue bag is properly sealed or alternatively store glue in airtight bins next to the edgebander and correctly labelled with the glue make and glue code. This to ensure wood dust, wood chips and edging chips do not contaminate the glue, causing unnecessary charring of the glue in the pot whilst reducing adhesion capability.

• Avoid the use of aggressive solvents to clean the surface of the edged board. This may weaken the initial bond. There are formulated release agents and cleaners commercially available for this purpose.

In conclusion the KSA recommends manufacturers strive to maintain machinery and equipment, store stock correctly and ensure staff training is on-going. Small problems taken care of timeously will eliminate big problems occurring in the future.

Thank you to Austro and National Edging for supporting this initiative.

The chefs included Reuben Riffel of the famous Reuben’s Restaurant in Franschhoek, Chef Neill Anthony, who has been referred to as “The God of Food” and is regarded as Cape Town’s most exclusive private chef. Andrew Robertson, Executive Chef for the Sun International imparts wisdom on tasty healthy eating options, while his colleague Kami Chen gave lessons on the art of sushi-making.

The Grand Gourmet area, which this year was known as The Market on Main and the Maboneng Precinct brought the most delicious deli to Grand Designs Live where cheese, olive oils, chilli-chocolate, pomegranate dressing and jams were all on offer.

When walking into the Grand Build section of the show, visitors found the new Saint-Gobain Expert Advice Centre, in association with Tuis and Home Magazine a brand new feature at Grand Designs Live which encouraged visitors to get one-on-one advice from top class experts in various fields. Experts were on hand to assist visitors in everything from interior design, architecture and landscaping to understanding home automation and going green.

Our firm favourite feature of the show, the IID House sponsored by Freeworld Coatings included an amazing 7-roomed house. One established designer and one celebrity worked together to decorate their individual room, with visitors to the show voting for their favourite. Designer Phil Darby was handed the award last night for decorating Tamara Dey's bathroom.
Radio personality Pabi Maloi and Mark Rielly worked on the Lounge & Dining room. Celebrity chef Justin Bonello and Liezel Malan whipped up the kitchen.
Fashion Designer David Tlale and designer Aidan Bennets designed the study and a second bedroom and radio personality Sureshnie Rider took on the main bedroom with Tracy Lynch as the interior designer.

The Interiors Theatre in association with Elle Decoration provided a platform for visitors to hear about the inspiration behind each design as well as to listen to expert talks on a variety of topics such as how to Maximilian space for a contemporary look, by Victor dos Santos of Santos and the art of paint effects by Charlie Vittori.

In the Grand Garden section at Grand Designs Live, sponsored by PPC Cement, visitors learned how to turn their ordinary garden into an extraordinary space with dynamic speakers on the Garden Theatre. Picnic Hill in association with Servest Office Plants, Landscaping & Turf was also a huge drawcard and included lush grass, picnic benches, gorgeous trees and plants and certainly rejuvenated your energy after taking some time out on the hill.

Featuring products recently released to the market and in some instances about to come to market, the House of the Future, in association with Popular Mechanics, Crestron and PG Bison the feature within the Technology area showcased the latest and impending technology, design, innovation and eco/sustainable products for your home.
With 27 500 visitors to the show this year – Grand Designs Live was an incredible success and we look forward to an even grander event in 2012.

Larson Industries celebrates 30 years of industry excellence

For 30 years Larson has been an integral part of the Kitchen industry in South Africa.

From humble beginnings the company was founded by Mr. Bob Larson and Mr. Pravesh Sewpersad. Both are still with the company today. In its early days Bob used to employ his sons to pack silicones and assemble plastic locks at 2cents a lock and 3cents a silicone tube. Bob always had a dream to keep the business as family orientated as possible as he always trusted family and within time more and more Larsons and Sewpersads joined the company.

Later when his sons got wiser, they joined the family business and decided to take Larson to the next level by participating and viewing shows in Europe and communicating with various suppliers there. The main aim was to upgrade the South African market by only providing the best in Kitchen Fittings.

Larson now offers a wide range of Kitchen fittings to the South African consumer and represents the very best in international brands. For 30 years the company has grown from strength to strength. Now a market leader in their field, Larson operates 4 branches and showrooms countrywide as well continuing support also for the outlying areas of South Africa. Larson continues to work hand in hand with world leading suppliers of kitchen fittings such as Hettich, Teka, Kessebohmer & Hailo.

Decorex Cape Town was held at the CTICC from the 29 April till the 2 May. Despite the royal wedding and the Stormers V Sharks game the show was very well attended particularly on the Friday and Saturday where participating KSA members reported to have had generated very good leads.

Feedback from vistors and KSA members was very positive. The KSA stand was a hive of activity with the public showing great interest in the membership and the protection afforded to them should they use a KSA member. It was a fantastic marketing opportunity for the KSA.

KSA members Smeg, Whirlpool, Ceasarstone, Niemann SA, Sembel-it and Saeco were among the exhibitors. While Easylife Kitchens sponsored the demo kitchen. Congratulations to Ceasarstone who won a certificate of excellance for their stand.

Well done to Angela Chatfield and the team at Decorex for a great show.

TRENDS AND TASTES – New show hits KZN

A new venue, new name and new ideas Trends & Tastes offered a very different look and feel to the show this year. The quality of exhibits, both big and small were of an extremely high standard. To keep within the industrial and green feel for the exhibition, the stands were cladded in pine using eco-friendly Xanita board.

The decision to move from the ICC to the Durban Exhibition Centre allowed the organisers to introduce an outdoor food market with jazz, as well as options to enjoy delicious meals from the Decadent Diner and the Wholefood Kitchen.

Well done and thank you to our KSA members who participated in the show – Exotic Kitchens, Fourth Dimension Kitchens, The Kitchen Studio, The Granite Studio, Southern Kitchens, Nyathi Kitchens, Niemann SA, Smeg, Defy, Technistone and Whirlpool.

Thanks go to Whirlpool for donating an Aqua Fridge for the KSA competition, won by Allan Smith.

Thank you to the KSA members who gave up their time to man the KSA stand. In particular Brendon Quail from Les Bowden Designer Kitchens who gave up many long hours, particularly when the weather was so spectacular!

Finally a big thank you to Niemann SA for donating the material and Nyathi Kitchens for manufacturing our KSA desk and cupboard for the stand. Your support is appreciated.
