ISS's mystery new product unveiled - Neolith!!!!
Cape Town’s design, architecture and construction fraternity witnessed the unveiling of a brand new, mystery product toting high expectations as ‘the next big thing’ in design.
The product, often referred to as ‘the extraordinary slab’, was revealed to special guests and the media in spectacular fashion at Selections Warehouse, Wembley Square. Jugglers and a DJ entertained the crowd until the address by the director of World Design Capital 2014, Richard Perez, whereafter the big reveal took place.
Never before available in South Africa, mafia-styled assistants whipped off black cloths to uncover displays of the product in application. Three displays were revealed, each one clad entirely with the product on show. A kitchen display, exterior cladding display and shop fitting display showcased this amazing product’s legendary versatility and variety of colour options.
NEOLITH is a world class, environmentally-friendly, sintered porcelain. One of the many advantages of NEOLITH is that it is innovatively manufactured in an invaluable, large slab size (3650mm x 1250mm); a size previously unheard of in the global market. With an attractive matte finish, and available in neutral, earthy, industrial and striking metallic colours, NEOLITH can be used for work surfaces and paving, as well as furniture, interior and exterior wall cladding.
Architects, designers and consumers will especially appreciate the product’s easy-to-clean, anti-graffiti properties. NEOLITH’s versatility and exceptional durability are set to take the construction and design industries by storm!
NEOLITH is distributed by International Slab Sales (Pty) Ltd. Slabs are available in 5mm and 10mm thicknesses, depending on the application.

KSA members - advertise in the 2013 brochure
The 2013 KSA brochure will be target consumers and industry professionals. The majority of the brochures will be given out to consumers nationally at Decorex, Homemakers, Grand Designs and The East Coast House and Garden Show. It will also be included in press packs we intend to send to the editors of the major industry and consumer magazines. We are also planning to use it to inform industry professionals such as architects and interiors designers about the KSA and its members. As such advertising in the brochure will ensure your company’s exposure to a key target market. Accompanying your advertising will be a selection on articles aimed at educating the public.
As you will know we offered members the opportunity to secure their advertising spot by paying for three years placement in advance. The following pages were booked on this basis and as such are not available for selection – inside front cover, back cover, inside back cover and middle double page. These pages will once again become available in the 2015 edition.
To book please contact Stephanie on capetown@ksa.co.za. Adverts should be submitted to us before 1 November 2012 in the following format and size:
Actual size: A5 Portrait, 148 x 210mm
Binding: Saddle Stitched
Line Screen: 133 Ipi
Image Resolution: 300 dpi
Inking: Process CMYK
Bleed: KJLKNLN,5mm
Accepted File Types:
Hi Resolution PDF: This is the preferred format for ad submissions. Ensure that all type is converted to paths; all colours are converted to CMYK. Ads with bleeds must include 5mm on bleed sides and crop marks embedded in the PDF placed at least 5mm outside the trim edge.
Adobe Photoshop: Create your ad in CMYK colour mode with a resolution of 300dpi at 100% size. Upsizing an ad from a smaller dimension or lower resolution will result in pixilation and an undesirable “halo” effect around your type. When submitting Adobe Photoshop files please render type layers and flatten the document, selecting EPS as your choice of output. Saving your document using Photoshop’s PDF writer in not advised.
Unacceptable file types: Quark Express, Film, PDF created with PDF writer, Postscript or native applications such as Quark, InDesign, Pagemaker, Illustrator, Freehand, and Photoshop. No JPEG images are acceptable. Avoid small type, especially as reverses or with light tints.
Should you require you Ad to be made up by the Agency, please contact them directly:
PUMP SA – Gary McBirnie 011 361-2200
We encourage all members to showcase themselves in the brochure and look forward to the consistent support we have received for the booklet over the past three years.

On Thursday 6 September the fifth, prestigious Caesarstone Student Design 2012 competition awards evening was held at The Venue at Melrose Arch, where nine competition finalists were honoured for their inspired entries to the competition, and the winner and runner up announced live.
Johannesburg and Pretoria’s finest architects, interior designers, industry leaders, lecturers and students from the country’s leading academic institutions and the media were present to witness the announcement of the winner from a record number of entries to the competition. The panel of illustrious judges was also on hand to personally congratulate the finalists and entrants on their high standard of designs and proposals. The judging panel included: Jonathan Anstey of Stauch Vorster Architects, Janina Masojada of design workshop:sa, Dorothy Van’T Riet of DVR, Greg Wright of Greg Wright Architects and Lisa Younger of Activate Space.
The competition brief The Good Food Arena stipulated the following: that the design be for “an existing (previously unhealthy) building that is renovated and revitalised through your design. It can be made up out of single or multi dwellings, interior and exterior spaces, with no height restrictions, located upon a larger section of land / existing development if required. It must be located in South Africa.” According to the detailed brief, designs had to include the imaginative and innovative use of the Caesarstone product, an ample colour palette, as well as scope for the following activities: grow, cook, taste, recycle. Students were required to have the oversight of one of their lecturers to provide guidance and oversight of each project.
Verona Ramkumar, from Tshwane University of Technology’s interior design department, submitted a design that won her the title of Caesarstone Student Designer of the Year and an enviable design software hamper. Together with her lecturer, she will be flown to Israel to see Tel Aviv and Caesarea, the home of Caesarstone. Carri Lurie, also an interior design student, and from BHC School of Design, was the brilliant runner up and received R5,000. Two entrants got special mention from the judges and R2,500 each from Caesarstone: Leago Mahlase from the interior design department and Tessa Dodds from the architecture department both hail from Tshwane University of Technology.
Caesarstone’s marketing director, Trevor King, extended congratulations to all those who entered, thanking the judges for their expertise and valuable contribution to the competition, “This competition is a highlight of the year for Caesarstone and the lecturer-student pairs that enter. The integrity and credibility of the competition is underwritten by the illustrious reputations of the judges that so generously availed themselves to oversee the adjudication process.”
Celebrations continued long into the night, while guests were entertained by famed South African magician, Stan Susman. National review 2011/12 from the KSA National Committee
On the 14 June 2012 the KSA national committee held its annual budget meeting to review the 2011/12 financial year:
Nationally the KSA has lost twelve members due to closure, liquidation or resignation, however, we have during the year brought on sixteen new ordinary members and five new affiliate members two of which are national affiliates.
On the administration, advertising and marketing fronts the year brought the following highlights:
• The publication of the 2012 KSA brochure – this brochure and the articles in it has proven popular with members, the public and industry professionals.
• The introduction of the KSA members’ flyer – this was introduced at the request of the membership to allow members to have literature that they could give to prospective customers that would encourage consumers to make use of them as a KSA member.
• The KSA has contributed editorial materials and articles to editions of the following magazines: To Build, Timber iQ, SA Homeowner, Habitat and House & Leisure.
• There has been a consolidation of administrative procedures and duties nationally
• A national marketing plan has been drafted
• Work has begun on the amalgamation of all three regions as one KSA company.
• An industry specific review of the Consumer Protection act was done by the KSA attorney.
• The KSA attorney redrafted and updated the KSA standard trading contract to ensure it was compliant with all new legislation including the CPA. This is available for all members free of charge.
• A proposal has been put together for updating the membership categories and subscriptions.
• Additions were made to the KSA web site in the form of a classified page (members can advertise their company, advertise for staff or advertise the sale of machinery at affordable rates via the KSA classifieds) and the Kitchen info page (this page includes all articles compiled by the KSA for the public and members to use).
• Statistics show that the KSA web site is becoming a good industry tool. Web site stats analysis shown a continued growth in visitors with the site receiving 135,586 hits in May with 2326 visitors staying on the site for prolonged periods and visiting multiple pages.
• Andre Hacquebord has been working with the KSA to update the KSA installer’s course and to develop an intermediate and advanced course that we feel will benefit installers that have been working within the industry better.
On the staffing front the 2011/12 year saw some huge changes. A national admin coordinator was appointed based in Gauteng (Melissa Sasman). KZN and Gauteng appointed new regional managers: Alecia Andrews was promoted to the position in Gauteng and Lorraine di Pietro joined the KSA bringing her vast experience in the industry to KZN. Stephanie Forbes, regional manager of the Western Cape, was appointed to the position of National coordinator.
The year has also been a busy one on the events front. Cape Town assisted four members with industry launches. All three regions held successful golf day with it being KZN’s first. Gauteng and Cape Town had an increased participation at Decorex. KZN began their partnership with the East Coast House and Garden Show and Cape Town had their first KSA pavilion and best stand award at Homemakers. All regions continued the success of the affiliate product evenings. Cape Town collaborated with KDMax on a ‘Design a kitchen’ competition and started a pilot work shadow project with The Carpenter’s shop charity.
Despite the industry experiencing some tough times over the year the achievements and growth of the KSA has been superb. The National committee thank all members for their ongoing support and congratulate the KSA team on their hard work.

KSA members offered preferential rates to advertise in the Directory of Architects South Africa
Reygan Media are the publishers of the annual ‘Directory of Architects South Africa’, as well as the web site www.directoryofdesign.co.za. They have recently embarked on an exciting new relationship with the Kitchen Specialists Association of South Africa and are very pleased to be able to offer KSA members an opportunity to further increase the reach of their brand into the local design and built environment industries.
For the 2012/2013 edition they will be running a fair amount of editorial on issues pertaining directly to the kitchen industry and will feature extensive contribution from the KSA themselves.
Obviously this presents an awesome opportunity to market the activities of members directly and they have come up with the following solution:
KSA members will be entitled to a reduction of 15% on any of their standard advertising rates; a free copy of the publication will be mailed to members and should members advertise in the Publication, they will also receive three months online exposure on www.directoryofdesign.co.za free of charge.
Directory of Architects will be featured at Decorex this year and will also be distributed to the members of the Institute of Interior Design Professionals (IID). With a readership as extensive as theirs members would do well to be placed in this publication.
Please contact Heloise 021 422 4445 or mail her at marketing@directoryofarchitects.co.za to take advantage of this offer now!

NEW TALENT TAKES THE REINS AT DECOREX SA
Two new décor and design heavyweights have joined the Decorex SA team on the eve of what promises to be a record-breaking Joburg show. The decor show landscape is due for something of a shake-up with the news that two respected and experienced names from the décor and design industry have joined the Decorex SA team.
Well-known décor and media specialist Sherri Chipps takes over as Decorex SA Portfolio Director and former fashion and décor magazine editor Jacquie Myburgh Chemaly has taken on the media and publicity account.
Carol Weaving, MD of Thebe Exhibitions and Projects Group, has welcomed the new appointments, saying it said much about the position of Decorex SA as one of the country’s leading exhibitions that the organisation had attracted two talented design and media personalities to take it into the future.
Decorex SA is South Africa’s largest décor, design and lifestyle exhibition, with expos in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town. Last year Decorex Joburg attracted over 50 000 visitors, attendance in 2012 at Decorex Cape Town was up 15% on 2011 figures and Decorex Durban was up 40% .
With headline sponsor Plascon on board since the show’s inception 19 years ago and with M-Net’s continued media partnership, Decorex SA is an essential day out for consumers and members of the décor and design trade alike. Decorex SA reflects the latest in local and international industry trends and interprets them in a novel yet accessible manner while also promising one stop shopping for anyone researching the latest in home accessories and finishes.
So far, this year’s exhibitions have attracted particular attention for their on-trend focus on the world-wide movement towards authentic craft and a “real” lifestyle. And while the celebrity-linked “Operation Man Cave” has been the source of much entertainment, the move towards a male-focused space in the home is also in line with what’s happening around the world.
Joburg’s August show will once more see the exciting launch of the Plascon 2013 Colour Forecast – the annual authoritative statement on colour trends keenly watched by decorators and designers throughout the country. Four exciting South African names in design have been asked to interpret the palette for visitors to Decorex Joburg.
Sherri and Jacquie will be working closely together to take the impact and exposure of Decorex SA to a new level. Sherri Chipps is known to most in the world of South African décor and design. One of the founding members of the St Leger and Viney team, alongside Gary Searle, Sherri also worked in sales and PR at Mavromac for many years before starting her own interior design business. Following a stint with magazines including Conde Nast House & Garden and then House and Leisure, Sherri ran her own PR and media strategy business, managing the accounts of various leading décor brands, before joining Decorex SA.
Being a passionate supporter and promoter of South African décor and design, Sherri says she is delighted to be joining a brand that truly platforms, champions and promotes the South African décor and design industry. “I am particularly excited to be taking over the Decorex SA portfolio at a time when design and décor are becoming such important lifestyle trends, offering us the opportunity to take this exhibition to new heights.”
In welcoming Sherri, Carol Weaving has also paid tribute to outgoing portfolio director, Melanie Robinson, for her contribution to Decorex’s success: “For more than eight years, Melanie consistently drove Decorex SA to be bigger and better every year, with the result that we have a world-class show that exhibitors from all over the country are clamouring to be part of. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to Melanie for her vision and determination.”
Jacquie Myburgh Chemaly, most recently editor of VISI magazine and now an independent media consultant, is on board to run the media and publicity account for Decorex SA. Jacquie too brings with her a wealth of experience and contacts in the South African lifestyle media and looks forward to pushing the PR envelope. “I have seen the media landscape change dramatically in recent years and believe this has opened up massive new opportunities in terms of publicity and public relations. Decorex SA has evolved into a world-class exhibition and it’s going to
be an exciting adventure helping to communicate this fact to both home owners plus the décor and design trade in a compelling fashion.”

Hirsch's launch to the kitchen industry in Cape Town
New KSA Cape Town member Hirsch’s held a launch to the kitchen industry on 24th May. The evening was well attended and allowed the Hirsch CT team to introduce themselves, their products and their services to the industry.
Branch manager Mark Tonkin introduced the Hirsch loyalty card to the industry. The loyalty card can be bought for R100.00. It has an identity number which must be quoted by your customers. This will entitle you to 2% of the amount spent by your customer back on the card. Caesarstone's top trends from Eurocucina 2012
The Caesarstone team visited Eurocucina 2012 and are proud to bring you, fresh from Milan, the top ten kitchen design trends for 2012.
1. A PLETHORA OF TEXTURES: Mixing and matching textures and surfaces across the kitchen was the most notable trend from this year’s fair. Kitchen countertops were crafted from any mix of engineered stone, glass, stainless steel, wood, and porcelain. Designers also used wallpaper and textured paint effects to create visual and tactile contrasts.
2. VARIED VERTICAL SPACING: Surfaces and shelving made appearances at surprising heights, and depths. Some shelves floated a foot above ground while many cabinets shot from floor to ceiling. On-trend kitchen islands featured overlapping countertops at slightly different heights, also counterbalancing one another at different angles.
3. COMPARTMENTALISED, OPEN SHELVING: Tall, compartmentalised, open shelves at various heights were the fad. Building this storage method into cabinets worked well, while some opted for free-standing or even floating shelves to break up big spaces.
4. NEUTRAL BASE COLOURS: Neutral colours commandeered many of this year’s kitchens, with colour accents in styling to create mood and a sense of fun. White was the predominant colour, followed by the classics: grey, black and dark wood tones.
5. FEATURE WALLS: The familiar ‘feature wall’ trend appeared regularly: 3 walls stroked with lashings of neutrals, allowing the fourth wall to break out in a bold, complimentary colour. Many kitchens included a mini feature wall between the hob and cabinetry, using black chalkboard, tiles or natural and engineered stone cladding. Some even extended the countertop material up to the cabinet. Exceptions to this trend were found in high gloss kitchens where neons and brights dominated cabinets, leaving little room for more colour in a feature area.
6. VARYING SURFACE THICKNESSES: There are two trends that appeared : ‘thick’ surfaces now measure between 40mm and 60mm compared to the 120mm thickness of prior trends; and standard kitchen countertops have become thinner and more sleek-looking. In terms of surface outlines, scalloped edges were popular with some designers, however others strikingly used thin, medium and thick surfaces in their mix of overlapping countertops of diverse materials, sticking to rectangular shapes.
7. BEVELLING: Subtle, simple bevelling was the order of the day allowing surfaces to retain a more squared off look, while ornate, traditional Italian kitchens adopting more voluptuous, classical edges.
8. LOW-HANGING LIGHTING: Island-aligned, low-hanging feature lights were everywhere. Functionality and design were important with some kitchens even featuring low-hanging lights over the hob area, as well as the prep areas.
9. SECRET APPLIANCES: Stoves, hobs and specialist wine refrigerators were often the only appliances to be seen in many Eurocucina kitchens this year. Other appliances were cleverly hidden behind sliding doors and soft-close drawers, and uniquely in the case of the Caesarstone stand, under a remote-operated, sliding countertop!
10. CLAD CABINETS: Move over, passé paint! If you’re not quite ready to embrace the au naturel look of wood, then textured cabinet-cladding provides an exciting alternative to smooth paint finishes, adding to the plethora of textures in the kitchen.

Decorex CT draws huge crowds
The KSA and many of their Western Cape members enjoyed a successful Decorex exhibition at the CTICC from between the 26 and 29th May. Participating members included Furnspace, BSH, Smeg, Whirlpool, Niemann SA, Caesarstone, Italian Lifestyle, Sembel-it, Franke and WOMAG. The show saw 40 000 visitors over the four days with Thursday and Friday delivering a good trade showing with plenty of architects, interior designers and developers.
To quote Trevor King of Caesarstone: “DECOREX Cape Town was an outstanding success for Caesarstone. The people just kept on coming – at one time I counted 34 people on the Caesarstone stand! What we love about DECOREX Cape Town is that it attracts the right target market for our brand. We found that many of the people who visited us were either building or redesigning their kitchens and very open to new ideas and advice. The success of DECOREX Cape Town is in my opinion, the result of an excellent marketing campaign and the outstanding, professional and efficient organisation on the part of the DECOREX team who made it all happen. My congratulations to them all!”.
The show hosted the first collaboration between the KSA and Furnspace’s KDMax. The stand was abuzz with competition entrants testing their design talents on the new software. Homemaker’s expo will see the second phase of this competition where design students will be invited to test their skills. Furnspace hope to take the competition to Gauteng and Kwa Zulu Natal in 2013. A huge thank you to the co-sponsors of the competition: Grass, Smeg, Caesarstone, WOMAG, Lansdowneboards, Franke, Plantation Shutters, Plascon, Rhoms Timberworld and Essential IT Solutions. This collaborative stand wond the 'best interactive stand' award.
The show was marred, however, by the visible lack of kitchen exhibits. There was a lot of public interest in kitchens at the show and the visitors were openly disappointed to see only one kitchen company exhibiting. From the feedback received by the KSA at the show the lack of visibility from the industry was cause for concern among the public as to the stability of the industry. The KSA would encourage kitchen members to relook at exhibiting at shows as the exposure not only strengthens your brand exposure but also instils confidence in the industry.
Decorex will be launching their 2013 show before the end of July and KSA members should keep their eyes open for the special offers open to them.
