Happy 21st birthday Easylife !
South Africa’s biggest kitchen franchise group celebrated their 21st birthday last weekend. Easylife’s story begins in 1992, when Alan Lombard started production at a small factory in Fontaineblea, Johannesburg, with a friend Richard Baker. Cupboard Hardware Centre was borne. In 1993 they moved to bigger premises of 350 m² in Strijdom Park, Randburg, retaining the Fontainebleau premises as a showroom. Business must have been very good because in 1994 a second store opened up in Ferndale.
In 1995 Philip Kirby joined the company as the admin manager and the first franchise pilot store was opened in Lynwood, Pretoria.
In 1996 Alan Lombard emigrated and Gerald Haumant bought the controlling shares in the company. In 1997 the company was restructured to allow for a Franchise Network and renamed Easyfit Cupboards. A 5th Easyfit Cupboard franchise store was opened by Jacques and Tersia de Wet in 1998 in Faerie Glen, Pretoria. Several more franchises are opened in the country in the years to follow.
Easyfit Cupboards moved away from the DIY market and a name change was prompted. They became Easylife Kitchens in 2003.
After a pilot franchise store was opened in Tokai, the Cape Town Factory opened in Bellville South in 2004. John Dammerman joined the company as Marketing Director in the same year and more franchises were opened. After extensive market research was done it was clear to the team that they had to take their brand to the next level. In 2008 their new logo was launched.
Today Easylife Kitchens manufacture their products in 2 dedicated factories and supply 26 Franchisees country wide.
At a stylish Las Vegas style beach party Easylife Kitchens celebrated their 21st Birthday in Cape Town on Saturday 9 November. All the Cape franchisees and design consultants attended as well as the staff from ELK Management and Manufacturing Cape. Suppliers and friends were also invited to join in the celebration.
As part of a national 21st birthday promotion one customer from each store won R21 000 cash back on their kitchen in a lucky draw. Stacy Japhta won the consultants ‘Superdraw’ and walked away with a whopping prize of R21 000. Guests were entertained by comedian Nik Rabinowitz who had everyone in stitches. Afterwards revellers got to gambled the night away at the pop-up ELK Casino!
A great time was had by all. The KSA and the rest of the kitchen industry would like to wish the Easylife Group a very happy 21st birthday and many more to come.

Cape Construction expo provides valuable networking to KSA members
KSA CT partnered with the Cape Construction Expo that took place at the CTICC from the 31 October till the 2 November. It was fantastic to see the membership support of this new expo and for KSA members to be leading the pack in this initiative. It shows how badly a forum is needed for networking in the construction industry between all players from industry professionals, to developers, sub-contractors and suppliers.
The show had a steady flow of visitors and all participating KSA members expressed themselves happy with the networking they were able to do. Thanks you to Quantum Leap Design and Joos Joiners for being part of the KSA pavilion and to Eclipse for their assistance with the stand. Thanks also to Lansdowne Boards, Max on Top, Salvacorp, Caesarstone, Neolith, Granite Projects and Superior Cabinet Doors for taking a gamble on this new expo.
We are all hoping the show will prove its usefulness to the industry as a whole and will be even stronger next year.

KSA product evening a huge success
Thursday evening saw KSA CT hold its last product evening for 2013. The evening was held at Hirsch’s and hosted by Hirsch’s, Franke Kitchen Systems and Sonae Novoboard. Ninety-one members of the kitchen and associated industries joined us for the evening, a great turn out for this late in the year when everyone is so busy.
The evening was kicked off by Stephanie Forbes of the KSA who welcomed everyone and reminded KSA members to book their advertising in the forthcoming 2014 KSA brochure. She also welcome all non-KSA members who had joined the evening and asked them to give serious consideration to membership.
Allan Hirsch then told all gathered the inspiring story of how Hirsch’s was started. He encouraged kitchen companies who do not want to get involved in the purchase of appliances for their customers to make use of their rewards card. The Hirsch’s rewards card will reward kitchen companies for sending their clients to purchase from Hirsch’s.
The Franke presentation followed with Nico Claase humourously taking everyone through the Franke range of products and services and introducing their newest mixer.
The presentations were ended with Patrick Cloete introducing the new Sonae Novolam app to everyone. This unique facility will allow kitchen manufacturers and shop fitters to capture their client’s imaginations by displaying all the Novolam colours in a kitchen setting with the touch of a button and all on their smart phone. The app can be downloaded from: http://www.sonae.co.za/app.
In closing a lucky drawer was held with the most amazing prizes to be won: a boom box system, a steam cleaner,2 coffee machines, a Franke mixer and 5 copies of the latest SA Décor and Design Guide.
Guests stayed on to enjoy the good food and to network and socialise with their industry colleagues. A great evening was had by all.

Redfish - KSA's new industry partner
The KSA are pleased to announce we have teamed up with another industry partner to bring you, the KSA member, more added benefit to your membership.
Redfish.co.za is an online site that works to team up consumers with approved tradesmen.
RedFish.co.za launched in June 2013 with the aim of bringing the home improvement industry online. With its free(to consumers), easy-to-use one-stop platform that enables customers and tradesmen to connect, RedFish fills a void in the arena of South African home improvement -- helping customers find quality, reliable tradesmen, and assisting tradesmen to find regular work.
According to Redfish co-founder Genevieve Dalrymple, the company's main objective is to facilitate jobs being done well, by people who do good work.
Central to the site's value is the tradesmen it attracts, who exemplify quality, value for money, professionalism and reliability. RedFish ensures this through checks on every registered tradesman, as well as the customer review and rating system it operates on the site.
How does it work for customers?
From major renovations to odd jobs around the home, any home improvement help can be sought out on the website. To begin their search, customer’s first register on the site for free, including as much relevant detail as possible to facilitate accurate quote responses. Interested tradesmen registered with redfish.co.za will then contact customers by e-mail to quote, which should provide a number of tradesmen from which to choose. A customer selects the best tradesman for the job based on the responses and quotes she receives as well as company information displayed on the tradesman’s professional online profile on the website. Once the job is completed, the customer will rate the tradesman's work and write a brief review, which becomes a permanent part of the tradesman’s online profile.
How does it work for tradesmen?
In order for tradesmen to respond to any job requests, they must be registered with RedFish. The more information and customer references they provide to redfish.co.za, the higher the ranking they will receive on the site. Once registered, tradesmen have the opportunity to highlight their qualities through their own online profile, which acts as a public marketing tool. In order to respond to a customer’s job request, a tradesman sends a brief message directly through the website. RedFish will then keep him informed about the job's status, and will also e-mail him other potential work opportunities.
RedFish is committed to protecting the information of all its users. As such, only the name and address of registered tradesmen will be displayed on the website.
What is on offer to KSA members?

Homemakers CT a roaring success
The eighteenth Cape HOMEMAKERS Expo, which took place from Thursday (29 August) to Sunday (1 September) at the CTICC, was again a roaring success, attracting more than 36 400 visitors.
KSA members once again put in a huge effort to produce stands of an excellent standard. Special mention must go to Smeg who were awarded the best KSA stand and a gold certificate by the judges and Easylife Kitchens who wowed everyone with a stunning contemporary country kitchen winning a gold certificate. It was disappointing to see so few kitchen exhibits and Easylife must to be acknowledged for their continued support of exhibitions and for representing the industry at the show so professionally.
Silver certificates also went to KSA members: Eclipse Furniture, Eurafrican, and Lansdowne Boards.
Says John Leyden, Business Development Director of HOMEMAKERS: “The 2013 Cape Homemakers Expo was again a huge success with many exhibitors reporting record sales and business leads that will keep them busy for months to come.
“The quality of the exhibits were once again of an extremely high standard. Even the typical Cape Town winter weather played its part in convincing consumers to visit an indoor event. We would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to all our exhibitors, visitors, sponsors and service providers for their contribution to the success of this year’s expo,” Leyden concluded.

Caesarstone Student Designer 2013 Competition - winners announced
The prestigious Caesarstone Student Designer 2013 competition awards evening was held last week at Cape Town’s trendy Bree Street art gallery, Young Blood, on Thursday 29 August. Historically held in Johannesburg, this was the first time the event has been held in Cape Town in preparation for the World Design Capital 2014 festivities in the Mother City next year.
Jenni Button and Stefan Antoni were just some of the well-known faces spotted at the awards evening. “It was very inspiring for us to see the talent out there in our young people and fascinating to hear the judges’ breakdown of the top entries. Overall it was a wonderfully successful evening,” says Debbie Zeelie of SA Homeowner magazine.
Nine finalists and the top three designs were selected by the judging panel in mid-August after students and their lecturers responded to the 2013 brief – The Forum of Excellence. Architect, Jonathan Anstey of Jonathan Anstey Architects, conceptualised the brief for the competition, “The challenge we set for the students this year was to embrace individuals or groups who had contributed to dramatic change or progress – just like the life of Nelson Mandela had impacted us as a nation.”
Greg Wright of Greg Wright Architects was a judge and MC for this year’s competition awards evening, “This year’s competition brief was a particularly challenging one. I thought that the entries were of a very high standard and we’re always impressed as judges by what we’re offered by students.”
“A very high standard of entries is received on a yearly basis because the students and their lecturers put a tremendous amount of hard work into their submissions,” says Philip Fouché of Emporio Communications – the company that mediates the Caesarstone Student Designer competition. Only five of the top entries from each faculty are accepted for judging.
“The annual first prize of a trip to an overseas design fair is awarded to both the student and the lecturer as an acknowledgement of the role that the lecturers play in mentoring students through the conceptual development and competition entry process,” says Caesarstone South Africa’s marketing director, Trevor King.
The lecturers traditionally provide their students with careful supervision and coaching in order to draw out the depth of talent, understanding and insight that is needed to reach the top 9 finalist stage. “This competition owes a lot of its success to the dedication of the design and architecture lecturers from the various institutions around the country,” says King.
The criteria for judging a winning scheme for the student competition has always been confined to the definition of the brief. Jonathan Anstey asks, “Have they embraced the opportunity, celebrated it, and come up with novel, original ideas? Those immediately rise to the top.”
The winning concept The Heart of South Africa was designed by Leon van der Westhuizen of Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s Department of Architecture, with oversight from his lecturer, Donald Flint. All the judges felt a connection with the historical event that Leon selected, namely, the first human heart transplant performed by Chris Barnard.
Anstey comments on why this design won first place, “Leon embraced this excellence within the medical field by taking the concept much further than anyone else in the competition. Not only is the building a physical demonstration of the heartbeat, but he was able to employ the idea that cardio vascular health can be celebrated through exercise activities within the building in celebration of the memory of Chris Barnard.”
Second place was awarded to Londiwe Fakudze of Tshwane University of Technology, from the Department of Interior Design. Londiwe’s lecturer was Rene Kotze. Third prize went to Chris Hechter of the University of Johannesburg’s Department of Interior Design. Chris’s lecturer was Elzabe Meiring.
According to competition judge, Dorothy van’t Riet of Dorothy van’t Riet Design, it is vital that students enter competitions such as these, “It stretches students and makes them realise that there’s a larger world of architecture and a big world of interior design. They are forced to think a bit further than just their next project.”
“Competitions are also a means of getting your profile out there. You get great publicity from competitions and they are great to put onto your CV,” says Janina Masojada of designworkshop: sa, also one of the judges from this year’s panel. “I think this is the closest a student will get to designing for a client,” adds Lisa Younger, a judge from Activate Space.
This year’s awards evening wrapped up with a short presentation introducing the 2014 brief, “re_Charge!” – presented by architect and judge, Greg Wright, who zooted through the audience on an electric skateboard to literally drive home the brief.
Go to www.caesarstone.co.za to check out the 2014 brief on video and to see clips of the judging process and judges’ comments on each of the top three entries.

What is NEOLITH .... Lize Sparks explains
ISS recently launched NEOLITH to the South African kitchen industry. Lize Sparks, NEOLITH’s senior product consultant, gives us the low down on this newest addittion to the ISS range of products.
What is NEOLITH and when did it arrive in South Africa?
NEOLITH is a full-bodied porcelain, but it’s so much more than just a normal porcelain tile. We classify it as a technical porcelain, because of the fact that it’s been engineered and produced in an unusual slab format. We launched NEOLITH in Cape Town in October 2012 and in Jo’burg and Durban in March 2013.
What can you use NEOLITH for?
As the slogan says, it can literally be used everywhere. It’s ideal for interiors and exteriors. What makes NEOLITH different to a normal porcelain tile is the fact that it is full-bodied and engineered into a large slab format. NEOLITH is perfect for home interior use such as kitchen countertops, flooring, wall and door cladding, as well as bathroom surfaces or even fireplaces. In terms of commercial and outdoor uses, NEOLITH is ideal for shopfitting designs, exterior building cladding, braai areas, paving and swimming pools because of its hardwearing properties. Large corporate orders enable us to offer the customer the option of matching slab colour to corporate colours.
Why would someone choose NEOLITH over another surface material?
NEOLITH is UV stable, so the colour will never fade – this is important when you’re designing commercial buildings in particular. It’s very easy to maintain – you can use almost any household chemicals on the surface. Because NEOLITH is non-porous it won’t pick up stains and it’s scratch resistant, also able to handle very high temperatures.
What does it look like?
NEOLITH has an attractive satin-matte finish, and earthy, natural tones. Designs that incorporate the holistic use of NEOLITH can create a very streamlined, contemporary look, which is very popular with consumers.
How can I get NEOLITH in my house and office space?
When you have your design in place, you need to contact a professional who can process the material according to your requirements. As International Slab Sales (Pty) Ltd is the wholesale distributor locally, you won’t be able to buy directly from them. They will be able to supply you with some options should you need referral to a fabricator or installer.

PUBLIC BEWARE - NO LINK BETWEEN THE AFFORDABILITY GROUP & THE KSA
The KSA would like to make it public that there is no link between the KSA and a company called The Affordability Group (also known as The Affordability that lasts group / Affordable Construction / Econo Kitchens / Budget Bathrooms).
Until recently this company was falsely claiming to be a KSA member. Their website now claims they deal with companies that are KSA members.
The Affordability group is NOT a KSA member and the KSA in no way endorses the company or its workmanship.
We advise the public to beware of any company trying to instill a false sence of security in their clients by falsely associating themselves with the KSA. Please always double check that the company you are talking to is a KSA member on the KSA web site.

Caesarstone Introduces New ‘Supernatural’ Designs
Caesarstone once again holds court as they launch the exciting new additions to their Classico collection, offering new and gorgeous surface options perfect for contemporary design paradigms as well as more traditional tastes.
The Supernatural designs offer five, mesmerising, marble-like colours that will serve up the ‘best of both worlds’ – the classic appeal of marble with all of the desirable properties of Caesarstone. “The beauty of marble, the benefits of Caesarstone” is the quartz surfaces manufacturer’s tagline for 2013’s advertising campaign and encompasses the unique appeal of this year’s sensational product offerings.
Although classic and ethereal, marble is a soft and porous, natural stone, leaving it vulnerable to cracks, chips, stains and regular maintenance. Caesarstone is chip, stain and heat resistant and comes with an invaluable lifetime warranty, making it an attractive, sophisticated alternative to the classic natural stone used in home and commercial spaces.
The range was recently shown at Decorex Cape Town. The hot talking point was the use of the stone in a hand painted country kitchen. The stone had been traditionally bevelled showing that engineered stone, often seen as only suitable to the contemporary kitchen, can now move eaily into the more traditional design styles.
The Supernatural designs became available nationally on 1 April 2013 at International Slab Sales branches, nationwide.

Exhibitors and visitors alike enjoy Decorex Cape Town 2013
Decorex Cape Town played host to over 36 000 visitors over the past weekend – proving once more that the mother city is the capital of décor and design appreciation.
Even the city’s first citizens, mayor Patricia de Lille, and Western Cape premier Helen Zille paid a visit to the show this year – both declaring how impressed they were with the décor and home innovation on display.
The focus of the show was on giving visitors ideas for turning their homes into a sanctuary – or finding their own blissful space within their home. The kitchen has to be such a place and it was fantastic to see a greater presence from the kitchen industry at the show this year with four kitchen companies exhibiting.
Decorex SA recently announced its support for World Design Capital 2014, and World Design Capital 2014 chief Alayne Reesburg was the guest speaker at the awards evening and she called on all members of the Decorex Cape Town community to embrace the World Design Capital by submitting projects for inclusion on the calendar. “Smartphone penetration in SA is growing at a rapid rate and analysts predict it will see a
significant spike over the next couple of years.
Arthur Goldstuck, MD of World Wide Worx says the current number of South African cellphone users who have smartphones is 21%, more than double what it was a year ago.
Gartner predicts smartphone penetration in SA is likely to reach 80% by 2014.”

We at Sonae Novobord saw the benefits of an app dedicated to our Novolam range of melamine décors. Of critical importance was to ensure that we created an app that was simple in design, fun in use, whilst offering the consumer the ability to create interactive imagery.
